Old Street Art

Working on the Clerkenwell/Shoreditch border, in a building sandwiched between the London College of Fashion and Farringdon’s design centres, I pass a lot of impromptu artwork on the way to and from the office. Here’s a brief selection of stuff I’ve seen recently (images not mine), including work by Nick Walker, Banksy, and Jimmy Cauty.

There’s an Amelie stencil right on the back of my building in Memel Street – I’ll try and get a snapshot tomorrow morning.

Topspin Media

I’m a bit pushed for time, but I want to promote these guys. Topspin Media is a company that’s really embracing the new media opportunities for promotion in innnovative ways. They’ve worked with the Dandy Warhols, been on the cover of Billboard Magazine, and they did that Nine Inch Nails google thing I blogged about yesterday.

Here’s what their website says:

Our mission: To provide artists the tools they need to build successful businesses.

Topspin is a media technology company dedicated to developing leading-edge marketing software and services that help artists and their partners build businesses and brands. We help artists manage their catalogs, connect with fans, and generate demand for music.

We’ve recently emerged from stealth mode and we’re slowly lifting the veil to reveal our products to a select group of artists, managers and labels, many of whom are actively using our technology today. Upon full release, the Topspin platform will offer artists a variety of ways to market directly to fans, to find new fans, and to gain maximum return on investment.

We’ll be sharing more details in the coming months so visit our blog often for updates.

The Team:

Founded by Peter Gotcher and Shamal Ranasinghe, and helmed by Ian Rogers, the Topspin team is a collective of in-tune music, technology and marketing professionals. We’re passionate about the business of music, we’re musicians and DJs, and we’re laser focused on building marketing tools for artists and their partners – tools we use ourselves. Meet the team.

We are venture funded and have an extensive network of business partnerships in place. Sound interesting? Please take a look around and review our open positions.

I’ve had several hits today from the blog of Moo.com founder Richard Moross. Snazzy, but also spooky, as he’s using exactly the same wordpress template as I am.

Nine Inch Nails has released download data for their recent free album The Slip (soon available on limited edition CD/DVD and Vinyl) in a very unique way: A Google Earth KML file that maps exact download numbers according to geographic region.

93 Downloads in Croydon, I think.  I can’t really tell – There’s so much red on London, I can’t distinguish between towns.  We have the second most downloads after LA!

And over 30 people downloaded it in Mauritius – that’s a lot!

“Every little college kid … should have been sued off the face of the earth”

Gene Simmons blames online music distribution for the death of the music industry.

And of course the record industry was in its element when coffins and condoms with your face on it were marketed to rake in as much as the CDs.   After all, it’s not as if the music or the fans are important to the music industry or anything, right?

I might happily take KISS’s advice when it comes to organising a ‘frat’ party, but when I want advice on musical integrity, I think most people would look elsewhere.
