Last night I went to the opening night of Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler’s show “Double Down Hearts” at the Soho Theatre. I didn’t know much about the pair besides an appearance at the Secret Policeman’s Ball and appearances in Flight of the Conchords, but as tickets were only £10 I thought it was worth the chance.
The show is probably best described as a mix of offbeat stand-up and a slightly Brechtian play. There are songs, short films, and even a little bit of audience interaction (single men beware!). As you would expect, the laughs didn’t come from straight forward jokes – although it does have a good does of smutty dialogue – but rather through the raise of an eyebrow or covert hand gesture. Definitely something different, but very entertaining, and a great value 50 minutes of fun – and the Melbourne and Edinburgh comedy festivals seem to agree!
The show is on for the next two weeks and tickets are going fast, so get in while you can!
