Music Magpie

A few years ago, after returning to London from university, I asked myself if I could ever give up my CDs.

So should I get rid of them? I don’t really want to. My CD collection is really quite aesthetically pleasing, all hung up there on my wall (and now overflowing on the nearby table). It’s like a mini-John Peel collection, if you ever saw that episode of All Back to Mine. The purist(?) in me likes the idea of having a tangible piece of artwork that I can enjoy with my music, that represents and illustrates it. But music in its essence is ethereal and untangible, isn’t it? So if i were really to be a purist I wouldn’t hold onto something that predisposed me to a certain way of thinking about it. Hm.

This month, a DHL van visited my parents’ house to pick up over 100 CDs to be evaluated, tested, and bought by Music Magpie – a company that trades CDs, DVDs, and video games for cash. Just type or scan the barcode for an instant evaluation

I got about £108 for 130 CDs – that’s just under a quid each, far less than I paid for most of them originally. But I still have the music, don’t I?  Just digitally.  All that have gone are the boxes and discs that haven’t been touched in years.  The money “earned” is essentially the difference between the cost of the physical and digital – especially considering many of the CDs were bought second hand on eBay.  It also pleased the music nerd in me to find that the less popular of the CDs – like Two’s Voyeurs and the Queen Adreena albums – went for several quid more than the Will Young albums that I still listen to on a regular basis.

Not everything went to MusicMagpie, however.  A few favourite CDs have come home because they are too precious to part with, and a handful will go on eBay or niceboots – because that My Ruin  EP and Tori Amos box set is probably meaningful to someone, and The Postal Service’s Give Up is NOT worth 30p.

End result: I’ve paid the musicians whose music was the soundtrack to my first 20 years, but I can walk around with everything in my pocket, and afford that coat I blogged about the other week.

Fellow nerds and the the freely curious can see the full list of CDs that were submitted to MusicMagpie after the jump.

CDs sent to MusicMagpie laid out by Title-Number of Discs-Price -Quantity.  Not entirely factually accurate (no 12 rounds release actually had 12 discs), but they were all accepted.

Good move. I sold all my CD’s years ago on ebay (except for nin and a couple other favs) I am now in the process of ripping all my DVD’s and selling those too. It’s over for physical media.

  2. I appreciate learing from your blog keep sharing! I think? I am just mesmerized.

If the cds are just gathering dust and you have digital copies already, makes sense to get rid to musicmagpie and clear the space and get cash. Not sure of many other alternatives for cds. For dvds either. For games, musicmagpie are not that great – suggest trying tradeyourgames.co.uk or webuy.com.

  4. There are plenty of websites out there that will buy your CDs/DVDs.
I recommend you shop around for the best prices. I am the owner of one website http://www.back2cash.co.uk
I’d be happy to quote you
